A major exhibition of photography from the former Soviet Block
Each picture immaculately captured through no formal training on holiday in Russia. The Artist has dramatically captured the changing scenery and historical social upheaval spanning just over 2 weeks of a package deal with Fly-be-night Travel agents.
The Photographer – Known only as Crumble explains her radical use of a 2 megapixle phone camera.
“Choosing to capture the images on a mobile phone was a technical consideration I arrived at when my real camera was stolen at customs” She explains, summing up her revolutionary approach to photography. “ I was strip searched when I went through the scanner my body piercings set off the alarms and when I collected my bags they had removed my hair gel, a copy of Harry Potter and my real camera.”
The photos demonstrate an ironic deconstruction of formal photography and composition. They rely on a limited depth of field and are often purposefully out of focus or make dramatic use of camera shake. Crumble explains;
“ I was on a train and had to sleep on there for the whole 109 hour journey as I had my wallet stolen in the youth hostel. Because I couldn’t afford to stay in another hotel, my entire journey is captured through the window of the carriage I was in – I later discovered just how effective many of the pictures were when I showed them to a national magazine editor who said he had never been asked to consider anything quite like them before. He was particularly amazed by the pictures of Siberia which he said were a little over exposed. I told him that he could have an exclusive and he told me he would show them to some other people and that I would become a household name in his office.”
There are over 40 images in the exhibition currently displayed in the soon to be refurbished rest room in Poole Meadow bus station in Coventry.
Crumble continues “It wasn’t the first choice for the exhibition space, the original one was the I-Con gallery but they somehow double booked with an exhibition called hanging week or something. So I guess it’s kind of ironical really that it is in a place connected with travel.”
She sums up her approach to the large print reproductions. I went to get them printed in Moseley and they put a sticker over the envelope saying that the machine had not printed correctly. I thought that was kinda ironic really so I guess it really is iconic imaging isn’t it?” I applied for a grant from creating reliance and they awarded me £5,000 to get them blown up. That’s how I arrived at the large format for the actual prints” She continues. “ The printers asked what my budget was and suggested pulling all the stops out”
The exhibition continues until it is closed.
